Exercising with your dog: a healthier 2022

With the start of a New Year, you might be thinking of trying something new.  Or working towards building in more activity and fitness to your life. 

We’ve got four great ways to kick start a more active 2022 with your dog:

  • Try extending your usual walk a few times a week to last longer: An hour of fast paced walking burns 200 calories. If you can’t find the extra time, then look at your routes and add in some hill climbs or cliff walks to increase the cardio benefits of your walk.
  • Dogs love going on a run, so try out some dog jogging – a bungee lead can be helpful with this to reduce the tension of a static lead so you and your dog can develop a steady harmony of pace! 
  • If you are up for a more organised run cross-country, why not try CaniX?  This is a great group activity, and there are plenty of weekend events, short and long to get involved with.  It involves running with a waist harness attached to your dog, who then helps to pull you along on the run.  Local groups are a great way to meet other like-minded dog owners and really help to get you out during the darker months. Your dog must be fully grown, i.e. at least 12 months old, to start. For more information, just search for CaniX groups in Cornwall.
  • Agility classes are a fun, energetic way to get a bit of exercise and develop your bond with your dog at the same time!  Stimulating and challenging, you can play for fun or also to compete.  There are a few local groups and classes, but they are very popular, so it may be worth getting on a waiting list asap even if your dog is still a young puppy.  Search for Dog Agility Cornwall to find links to several local providers or get ideas for some home-based agility in the garden!
